Before the introduction of the euro cylinder and uPVC doors or multi-point locking mechanisms most if not all entrances would have had a mortice lock fitted. Mortice locks in addition to the rim-cylinder locks are among the most common door locking mechanisms in the UK. There are many different types of mortice lock, but at the end of the day there are two kinds, a sash lock or a deadlock. The difference is that the sash lock has a handle built into the lock, and the deadbolt doesn’t.

Current Mortice Locks
Currently, most Mortice Sash Locks are universal. This means that a left-hand opening door and a right-hand opening door can be fitted with the same Mortice Lock with just simple alternations. Instructions will be included in the Mortice Lock on how to switch the latch to left hand/right-hand opening.
All Mortice locks are equipped with levers, the number of levers inside a mortice lock denotes its security strength/level. British Standard BSI 3621 Mortice Locks are all five-lever but have the addition of a curtain (lock pick resistant).

Function
Mortice Locks are used in front doors and other exterior entrances. On an external door, you need a higher security mortice conforming to BSI 3621. You can install Mortice Locks internally, these often are of a lower specification and are mainly used for privacy rather than security.

Mortice Locks Issues
After several years wear and tear on the Lock, it’s self can make it become defective and no longer open or lock. This means that old sash and deadbolt mortice locks are not insurance approved anymore as the BSI standard has been improved.
If someone were trying to break into your property with these non-BSI approved locks the insurance company would not be responsible for any stolen goods.
