The DBS allows public, private and voluntary sector organisations to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for specific work.
DBS checks are particularly important for professionals working with children or vulnerable adults
and provide greater access to criminal record information through the UK’s Disclosure Services.
The DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, once known as the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check, is becoming increasingly important when working in the private household sector.
The certificate will contain information of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions and reprimands on the Police National Computer, that are not subject to filtering.
If an individual or an organisation has concerns with respect to a staff member or contractor, such as a Locksmith, they may refer the matter back to the DBS.
The DBS will work with multiple agencies to assess whether the individual should be prevented from working in regulated activities such as a Locksmith with vulnerable or elderly people.

Different levels of DBS checks:
Basic DBS check
A basic DBS check is performed for any reason or purpose, this can include employment.
The DBS certificate will contain information about convictions and conditional warnings that are considered to have not been spent under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974.
Standard check
Standard DBS checks are appropriate for
large number of jobs/roles, such as Locksmiths and security guards.
The DBS certificate will include details of both spent and unspent convictions, warnings, and reprimands retained on the PNC, that are not subject to filtering.
Enhanced check
The enhanced DBS check is appropriate for people working with children or adults in certain circumstances, such as those receiving health care or personal care.
An enhanced check is also necessary for a
small number of other roles, such as Locksmiths.
