Common Door Lock Types

There are door lock types that are commonly replaced in the UK. These door lock types include

Nightlatch (Yale Type)

A nightlatch holds the door shut using a latch type lock which can be easily set into a deadlock position. The nightlatch is sometimes referred to as the Yale Type lock because its leading manufacturer is Yale. The lock is also sometimes known by its traditional name, the rimlock, and is mounted on the surface of the door unlike the Mortice lock. The nightlatch is used as a form of security enhancement and not meant to be the only lock on the door.

Mortice Locks

The Mortice lock is fitted inside a mortice that is cut into a wooden door frame. A bolt in the lock shoots out and locks into the striker plate when the key is turned. The makes it difficult to pick as the entire locking mechanism occurs inside the door. The mortice lock has two significant types. The Mortice Sash Lock comes with a handle, while the Mortice Deadlock is always operated by key and does not have a handle. Mortice locks are commonly found on doors made out of timber or aluminium and are made to meet British standards 3621 and 8621.

Euro-Lock Cylinder

The Euro-lock is the most popular type of lock and found on different types of doors such as uPVC, timber multipoint door locks, and aluminium front doors. Due to their popularity, front doors using certain types of Euro-lock cylinders are prone to burglary attacks and break-ins.  The most secure Euro lock cylinder standards are the SS 312 Diamond and the TS 007 3 star. Euro lock cylinders are easily keyed alike which makes it possible to open numerous locks using one key.

British Standard Locks

Before any lock is considered British Standard, they must have gone through rigorous security tests in which their strength and durability are assessed. The British Standard is used to provide a standard for insurance policies in the UK.

British Standard locks have the BSI Kitemark imprinted on the faceplate of the lock. Cylinder Rim locks and Mortice Locks are required to meet British standard 8261 or BS 3621. These are mostly found on ground floor front doors and some interior doors.

Changing Locks FAQ'S

Most insurance companies have specified locks for each door and window in the home to maintain compliance with their policies. It is better to contact your insurance company and ask for the lock standards that meet its requirements. However, a typical British insurance company may request for the locks to conform to BS3621 British Standard Kitemark.

For security purposes, it is better to change your lock when you lose your keys. This prevents your home or office from getting burgled. We can install new locks for you and get you duplicate keys so you don’t get locked out again.

Every British Standard lock has the image of the British Standard Kitemark to the right. This may be accompanied by BS: TS007 for Euro cylinders or BS: 3621 2007 for mortice locks which are the current British Standard.

The length of time it takes to change the lock on a door depends on the type of lock, type of door, and the number of locks to be replaced. On average it takes about 30 minutes to replace a lock and make other necessary adjustments.

Rekeying is a locksmithing service in which an expert locksmith is required to change the internal components of the lock. Rekeying is more expensive than lock replacement, so locksmiths typically advise for the lock to be changed instead.

The cost of replacing your lock depends on the type of door, type of lock you want, size of the lock, and the time spent on site. For an accurate quote, contact us and request a free site survey or provide us with appropriate information through the contact form.
